Piazza del Popolo and its surroundings has always been and is still today the centre of art. In this part of town you find several art galleries and studios, as well as the Accademia delle Belle Arti and the Artistic Lyceum.
Other than the 3 well known streets starting from Piazza del Popolo (Via di Ripetta, Via del Corso and Via del Babuino), there is also the less famous Via Margutta with its annual Fiera dei Cento Pittori which remembers the Bohemianism and the art of the Fifties. In that period art galleries didn't exist and artists met up in art sensible trattorie (restaurants).
The private galleries in Rome hold more than 800 exhibitions a year. The season of exhibitions extends from October to June. Usually the galleries are open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, between 5 pm and 8 pm.
Compared to the number of important private galleries, there are few public galleries. The two most important public galleries are Palazzo delle Esposizioni and Palazzo Ruspoli.
The Palazzo delle Esposizioni (Via Nazionale, 194 - Tel. 06-4885465 Mond., Wedn.-Sat. 10am-9pm) is one of the few Roman buildings expressly retained for holding exhibitions. After restoration work, of about twenty years, the building was re-opened in 1990 and has become one of the most important cultural centres of Rome.
The Palazzo Ruspoli (Via del Corso, 418 - Tel. 06-6874704) was owned by one of the old Roman families and is used for exhibitions of art, photography, archeology and history.
