You like shopping? Welcome to Rome then! You will find almost anything you are looking for in the centre of town. The only things you are unlikely to find there are supermarkets and shopping centres.
Clothing shops, cosmetics stores, corner stores (alimentary), art shops and antique shops are abundant in the centro storico. Epoch clothing can be found in Via del Governo Vecchio as well as at the flea market in Via Sannio. Between Piazza Navona and the river Tevere you can find a lot of jewelers, antique and art shops. Handicraft shops can be found around Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori. Shopping in Rome. If you like shopping you won't get bored in Rome. It is generally known that Italy is synonymous with elegant, fashionable and high-quality clothing. That is why it is not surprising that it takes a few days to explore all the different parts of town where shopping is possible. Generally, shops are closed from approximately 1.30 pm until 4-5 pm. But keep in mind that these closing hours are very approximate and that some of the important high fashion shops don't close at all during the day. In Summer, shops will be open later than in Winter but are likely to close on Saturday afternoon in compensation. Tourist shopping is centred around the centro storico, the heart of Rome. In this area of town, you will find everything from casual to high fashion clothing.
Something interesting to know is that Rome's sales periods are around January-March and in Summer, July-August.
A shopping tour. If you are interested in having an idea of what Italian fashion really is, we propose that you follow the itinerary described below:
Take the Via del Corso at Piazza Venezia in the direction of Piazza del Popolo. When you arrive there, go into Via del Babuino which leads you to Piazza di Spagna. Continue shopping in the little streets between the piazza and Via del Corso - don't forget the famous Via Condotti and Via Borgognona! - and from there, discover the little streets leading to the Fontana di Trevi. There are also a few beautiful shops in the streets starting at Piazza Trinità dei Monti (at the top of the Spanish Steps).
Cheaper shopping. If you would like to buy some leisure clothes at a price remarkably cheaper than the ones you buy in the historical centre, take the metro to Piazza Re di Roma (linea A) and have a look at the shops in the Via Tuscolana. Other streets for shopping are Via Nazionale (from Piazza Venezia, direction Stazione Termini), Via Ottaviano-Via Barletta and Via Cola di Rienzo (both near the Vatican). Since these streets are less touristy you might find they are more interesting.
Flea markets. An alternative way of shopping is to scour flea markets. There are many of them in Rome but only the most interesting and impressive ones are described below. Addresses and opening hours are given in the table at the end of the subsection.
Two things worth mentioning: First - Don't forget to bargain if you don't want to be ripped off. The stallholders tend to ask double the actual price that you should pay. Second - pickpockets like crowded places - like for instance at a flea market!
Porta Portese, Rome's most well known flea market, was moved to Testaccio after the second World War. Before that period the market was located on today's Campo de' Fiori. Also a lot of stands of the Tor di Nona, the black market of the Forties, moved to Testaccio. The market is well known for its enormous variety of products. They offer antique furniture, clothes, books, music, ceramics and many other useful things. If you want to buy something there, make sure you go very early in the morning. After 9 am, all of the good bargins have been bought!
Another excellent market that sells new and secondhand clothes is situated in the Via Sannio. At this market you find more or less the same articles as on Porta Portese, only on a smaller scale. At this market you can do some nice deals but you'll need to take the time to search between the rubbish.
At the market at Piazza Fontanella Borghese you will find prints, antiques and books.
A nice flower market is Mercato dei Fiori. Plants and gardening material are offered at very reasonable prices. Not far away from the flower market, there is an alimentary market where you can buy fresh food at prices that are amongst the cheapest in Rome.
  • Portaportese Sund: 5-6am-2pm Viale Trastevere (stazione), tram 13
  • Via Sannio: Mond.-Fri., 10am-1.30pm; Sat., 10am-6pm tram 13, 30b
  • Mercato dell'Antiquariato: Mond.-Sat. 9am-5.30 or 7 pm Piazza Borghese
  • Mercato dei Fiori: Tue. 10.30am -1pm Via Trionfale 47-49, Metro Ottaviano
Food It is best to buy vegetables, fruit and other fresh products at open markets (Campo de' Fiori, Piazzale Ponte Milvio, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, Via della Croce, Via Andrea Doria and many, many others). Something useful to know when you go shopping is that Italians say un etto for 100 grams and un chilo for one kilo. For everything else it is more economical to go to a supermarket. Unfortunately, without a car, this is a very time consuming operation, since almost each one of them is situated out of town. You can find food in the city's corner stores (alimentari) as well. Very practical but expensive.
Antiques. The antique stores of Rome contain some treasures worthwhile seeing. If you are interested in buying something, don't expect a low price! The most renowned antique stores are located in Via del Babuino and Via Giulia. Also Via Coronari is well known, especially for its Mostra dell'Antiquariato (antiques' exhibition) in May and October.
Furniture restoration stores can be found around Campo de' Fiori. These stores restore old furniture and resell the furniture for enormous prices. The furniture is beautifully hand crafted. Like most things in life: you get what you pay for.
Supermarkets, Department Stores and Shopping Centres In Rome, there are not as many supermarkets, department stores and shopping centres as you find in many cities in the world. Most of them are located around Rome's ring road, the Grande Raccordo Anulare, but some do exist near the historical centre of Rome. These stores usually close their doors on Monday morning, or Thursday afternoon. It depends of which one in particular.
