We can consider three cities as sacred for the European citizen: Jerusalem becouse providing the first western vision on world and men, the second one is Athens becouse is the source of the intellectual and artistic aspects of culture and the third one is Rome, the mediator of this double inheritance. Rome is the History of Europe and without Rome, the notion 'European City' would only have been a geographical indication. The progress of the civilty during the periodo of the Roman Empire is great; so, we may consider that Rome the more important city of Europe.

Picturesque places in Rome In Rome there are still some hidden places where you can sense the real ancient Roman atmosphere. There you can feel the people at work doing the old traditional professions. One of these areas is situated on both sides of the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II. Next to Piazza Campo dei Fiori, you can walk along Via del Pellegrino. When you cross the Corso Vittorio Emanuele II you will find Via del Governo Vecchio and Via dei Banchi Nuovi.
Another picturesque part of Rome is the Jewish Ghetto. Before you enter this district ensure you have a spare hour - it is very easy to loose all sense of direction in the tiny windy steets.
On the other side of the Tibre is the Roman area called Trastevere. Although, the popular charms of this area, it offers good restaurants and some expensive shops which tend to attract tourists. Nevertheless, it is worthwile spending a Saturday evening/night in the very animated Trastevere!

Panoramic views in Rome A nice way of finishing a day of touring Rome is to climb one of Rome's hills and see the sunset over the city's panorama. Different places to view the city from are:
Gianicolo Hill. From Piazza Garibaldi on Gianicolo hill.
Pazziale Napoleone. Climb the stairs on the Piazza del Popolo leading to Pazziale Napoleone (the hill is called Pincio), where you have a splendid view. There you can admire the typical southern colours in which many houses in Rome are built. Take the Viale del Belvedere to end up at La Casina Valadier and take the occasion for looking at the beautiful terraces on the houses' roofs.
Trinitia Dei Monti. From Trinitia Dei Monti, above Piazza di Spagna, there is a view into the famous shopping area of Via Condotti.
Monte Mario. Monte Mario offers a panoramic view very different to the ones mentioned above. Once you get there, you will notice that Rome is not only the perfect city that you see from all the other places, as mentioned above. Actually, besides San Pietro, you will also see ugly appartment blocks, as in every big city. One could say it is a more realistic view.
San Sabine.
St. Peter's Basilica's Dome.
Castel Sant'Angelo. If you climb to the top level of Castel Sant Angelo you will be afforded a view across central Rome. The view is interesting because you are very close to the centre and can get a far more detail view of the city than can be obtained from other viewing spots on this side of the city, such as Piazza Garibaldi on Gianicolo Hill.
